AJOL is an online service to provide access to African-published research, and increase worldwide knowledge of indigenous scholarship. AJOL contains over 100 journals in the field of health sciences.

CINAHL
The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) covers all aspects of nursing and allied health disciplines. The HINARI Programme offers free or very low cost online access to CINAHL to non-profit institutions in developing countries.
Clinical Evidence
Clinical Evidence is a resource for informing treatment decisions and improving patient care, published by the BMJ Publishing Group. Developing countries can get free or very low cost access to this resource through the HINARI Programme.
Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library provides access to independent high-quality evidence for health care decision making. It includes the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), which is the leading resource for systematic reviews in health care, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). CENTRAL includes citations that may not be indexed in other bibliographic databases. The Cochrane Library is available with free one-click access to all residents of countries in the World Bank's list of low-income economies. Access to The Cochrane Library is also available via the HINARI and INASP programmes.
DARE
The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) contains 15,000 abstracts of systematic reviews including over 6,000 quality assessed reviews and details of all Cochrane reviews and protocols. The database focuses on the effects of interventions used in health and social care. DARE is also available as part of the Cochrane Library interface and the database can be searched via the TRIP Database.
Database of Promoting Health Effectiveness Reviews (DoPHER)
DoPHER covers systematic and non-systematic reviews of effectiveness in health promotion and public health worldwide. It currently contains over 2,700 reviews of health promotion and public health effectiveness. DoPHER is hosted by the EPPI-Centre which is part of the Social Science Research Unit at the Institute of Education, London.
EBM Guidelines
This resource, which is available through the HINARI Programme, offers a comprehensive collection of clinical guidelines. It addresses the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and conditions.
EHCRC - Evidence Update
Two-page summaries of a Cochrane Review of the healthcare interventions relevant to people in low-income and middle -income countries, developed by the Effective Health Care Research Consortium.
Evidence Portal
The Evidence Portal of the Virtual Health Library unites, organizes, and offers integrated access to health information sources of better level of evidence in agreement with the Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) methodology, and access to information sources about the EBM methodology itself.
EVIPNet Portal
EVIPNet is a social and collaborative network that promotes the systematic use of health research evidence in policy-making. Focusing on low and middle-income countries, EVIPNet promotes partnerships between policy-makers, researchers and civil society in order to facilitate both policy development and policy implementation through the use of the most reliable scientific evidence available. The EVIPNet Portal promotes interactive collaboration and serves as a learning environment to disseminate best practices of EVIPNet.
Health Systems Evidence
Free access point for evidence to support policymakers, stakeholders and researchers interested in how to strengthen or reform health systems or in how to get cost-effective programs, services and drugs to those who need them. A one-time, free registration needs to be completed before you can access this database. Health Systems Evidence is an initiative of the McMaster Health Forum.
HINARI
The HINARI Access to Research in Health Programme provides free or very low cost online access to the major journals, databases and other resources in biomedical and related social sciences to local, not-for-profit institutions in developing countries. HINARI provides access to a number of EBM resources, including Clinical Evidence, The Cochrane Library, EBM Guidelines, as well as a number of EBM journals.
LSHTM Research Online
Freely accessible online database of research conducted by staff from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Provides access to the full text of research articles where possible, otherwise provides links to where the full text can be accessed.
Pan African Clinical Trials Registry
The Pan African Clinical Trials Registry (PACTR) is a regional register of clinical trials conducted in Africa. The registry is an African initiative serving the needs of Africans. It provides a platform where clinical trials can be registered prospectively. In addition, it also provides a searchable, electronic database of planned trials and trials currently in progress.
PROSPERO
An international database of prospectively registered systematic reviews in health and social care. Registration is free and open to anyone undertaking systematic reviews of the effects of interventions and strategies to prevent, diagnose, treat, and monitor health conditions, for which there is a health related outcome.
PubMed Clinical Queries
PubMed is a freely accessible resource that comprises more than 20 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. The Clincal Queries feature of PubMed provides specialized search options for clinicians, including searching by clinical study category and searching for systematic reviews.
TRIP Database
The TRIP Database is a clinical search engine designed to allow clinicians to quickly find answers to their clinical questions using the best available evidence. Note the option in the filter column on the right to limit to information relevant for developing countries.
WHO e-Library of Evidence for Nutrition Actions (eLENA)
eLENA is an online library of evidence-informed guidelines for an expanding list of nutrition interventions. It is a single point of reference for the latest nutrition guidelines, recommendations and related information. eLENA aims to help countries successfully implement and scale-up nutrition interventions by informing as well as guiding policy development and programme design.
WHO Reproductive Health Library
The WHO Reproductive Health Library (RHL) is an electronic review journal published by the WHO Department of Reproductive Health and Research at WHO. RHL takes the best available evidence on sexual and reproductive health from Cochrane systematic reviews and presents it as practical actions for clinicians (and policy-makers) to improve health outcomes, especially in developing countries.
This initiative is supported by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in the Netherlands.
At the Second Annual CEBHA Meeting in 2012, doctors from nine African countries, alongside European colleagues, signed the Kigali Declaration on Evidence Based Healthcare in Africa.
